Homemade Toiletries

Tired of risking aluminum poisoning in the name of banishing underarm odor? How about having to choose between aerosol or non-recyclable plastic pumps when buying hairspray? If this sounds like you, take notes. I have some recipes to take care of these dilemmas.

—————————-

Deodorant
1 TB baking soda
1/2 TB rubbing alcohol
1/2 TB water
Empty (and properly cleaned!) roll-on container
(Roll-on ball can be removed with a small screwdriver from an eyeglass repair kit.)

Empty all ingredients into container. Replace ball, making sure it is secure. Shake the container to mix all the ingredients. Use as you would regular deodorant.

[Note: You WILL perspire if you are engaging in vigorous activity. However, the baking soda and alcohol will prevent odor.

Make sure you properly dilute the alcohol. Otherwise, do not apply to a freshly shaved armpit. OUCH!

Facial scrub
7 tsp spent coffee grounds (cooled)
5 drops tea tree oil

Scoop the coffee grounds from the coffee filter into a clean jar. (I use an old facial scrub jar made of #5 plastic.) Add tea tree oil. Mix until well blended. Use as you would regular facial scrub.

DO NOT USE THIS RECIPE IF YOU HAVE SENSITIVE SKIN!!

Hair Spray
1/3 cup hot water
1 tsp white sugar
5 drops tea tree oil
Travel-sized hairspray bottle with pump

Mix all ingredients well. When cooled, transfer mixture into bottle and use as usual. Provides a decent hold!
